Practice on the course

The range shows you numbers. The course shows you the shot that actually costs you strokes — and GSPro lets you stand over it as many times as you want.

Before you start

  • A round started in GSPro — see Start a round.
  • One club you want to get better with. Seriously, just one to begin.

1Start a round on the course you want to practice

  1. Set up a round the normal way — see Start a round.
  2. Add only yourself as a player. Practice is faster with one name on the card.
  3. Pick the course with the shot you want. Working on 150-yard approaches into a tucked pin? Choose a course with plenty of them.
  4. Start the round.

2Turn on practice mode

  1. Open the in-round menu (Esc on the keyboard, or the menu button on screen).
  2. Switch on Practice Mode.
  3. Close the menu. You’re still on the course, but nothing you hit from here goes on a scorecard.
Practice mode is per round. Turn it off again (same switch) if you decide to play the hole for real.

3Drop the ball where you want to hit from

  1. Open the in-round menu and choose Drop.
  2. An overhead map of the hole appears. Tap or click where you want the ball — fairway, rough, bunker, right on the fringe.
  3. Confirm. The view swings round to your new lie, with the distance to the pin on screen.
This is the single most useful thing in the building for your scores. Drop at your real-world problem distance — the one you always come up short on — and hit it until it stops being a problem.

4Hit it again — and again

  1. Hit the shot. Watch where it lands and read the carry, spin and curve on screen.
  2. Open the menu and choose Mulligan. The ball goes straight back to the same spot.
  3. Repeat. Ten balls from one spot tells you more than ten holes of scrambling.
  4. Want a slightly different look — same distance, other side of the fairway? Use Drop again and move the ball a few yards.
Try one club for a while, then the club above and below it. Knowing your real 7-iron number, not your best one, is what changes your scores outside.

5Move to another hole or shot

  1. Done with this hole? Open the menu and choose Next hole (or jump to a specific hole if the option is there).
  2. Or simply play the hole out — practice mode stays on, so nothing is scored.
  3. Around the greens: drop the ball just off the fringe and work on chips and pitches the same way. Bunkers too.

When you’re finished, quit the round from the menu and run through Ending your session.
